One of Wichita Falls’ hidden secrets is Hibiscus Café, a restaurant located by Sheppard Air Force Base, specializing in authentic Greek foods from gyros to baklava.
When I got there, it was near closing time so there were not a lot of customers. Looking around I noticed all the beautiful murals of Greece. There was Greek music playing in the background as well to provide the full experience.
The waitress came and took my order. I went with a Coke and a gyro meal. This included a pita wrap stuffed with beef, lamb, onions, tomatoes, feta cheese and tzatziki sauce with french fries on the side.
Hibiscus Café provides a relaxing ambiance that makes the wait for the food not so bad. The waitress, Mary, is the daughter of the owners. She came and introduced herself more while my food was prepared. She took her time to ask how my day was going and showed customer appreciation. The service the restaurant provided was over the top.
When I got my food, it looked picture-perfect. I bit into the gyro and my taste buds celebrated with joy over the classic combination of ingredients. The lamb and beef were perfectly seasoned, tenderized and moist. The tzatziki sauce, a cucumber- and yogurt-based sauce, was a great final touch. The feta cheese adds an amazing flavor and texture to the gyro, but if you’ve never had it before, I’d try some on the side first. It was the right amount of food to fill me up without needing to unbutton my pants after the meal.
The fries that accompanied the gyro were large and had a crisp outside with a soft, warm inside—the perfect fry. They also had a good amount of salt to keep them from tasting plain without distracting from the fries’ fluffy interiors and clogging my arteries at the same time.
There is a reason gyros and french fries have become such a classic combination.
If a gyro is not your thing, Hibiscus has other foods like Greek salads, humus and moussaka.
If you’re in the mood for dessert, baklava is available to fulfill your sweet tooth. Baklava is made of layers of filo dough, chopped nuts that are sweetened and held together with syrup or honey. If you have never had baklava before, I recommend trying it at Hibiscus.
The owners of the restaurant definitely brought the Greek life to Wichita Falls through their cooking, service and hospitality.
My meal came out to $10. With the quality of food and the wonderful service I received, I would recommend people go to this place on a weekly basis. The atmosphere within Hibiscus alone could change your attitude on the day to a positive one.
