The Student Development and Orientation Office hosted “Engagement Week” from Sept. 16-21, the fourth week of the fall semester.
The aim was to get new and returning students involved in the variety of student organizations offered on campus.
The week kicked off with two organization fairs located in the Comanche Suites of the Clark Student Center.
Spanish Club member Sadika Barley said she sees the benefits of attracting students who are not in organizations as well as students who are already involved on campus.
“It is a good thing that we have this event because I mean we get to see each other,” Barley said. “Everybody is in one spot. So we kind of get more people from everywhere just walking by looking at our booth – rather than just sitting in the student center and nobody is paying attention to us or anything like that. But here it’s like everybody knows what this is for, like you know different organizations trying to showcase what they do.”
There were more than 50 student organizations signed up for the organization fairs including some new groups.
Darien Roach, the secretary for Spreading the Profession of Athletic Training, said this is the first time for SPAT to be involved in promotions like engagement week, but he does see the benefits.
“What we are trying to get from this fair is to get our name out to the student body and let people know about SPAT,” Roach said.
Many student organizations like SPAT have already had meetings prior to the week’s events. Roach said they already have thirty new members, but hoped to gain between 10 and 15.
Some officers decided to keep it simple in their approaches during engagement week.
“We’re just trying to inform people about it,” Katee Erwin, senator of Social Workers Acting Together, said.
In addition to the student organizations fairs, the student development office also hosted a leadership conference on Sept. 19, which housed 92 students. Students were encouraged to download the guidebook app which will send them updates of events being held on campus throughout the academic year.
