MSU has a yearly fall-to-fall retention rate of 72 percent. As for the other 28 percent, Keith Lamb, vice president of enrollment management, multiple factors prevent them from returning to the university.
“The main reason that students don’t return, it really falls into two broad categories; one is academics. Either they didn’t perform as well as they had expected, or they have changed their major or determined a major that we simply don’t offer at this institution. The other broad category is financial reasons,” Lamb said.
Kassandra Alonso, nursing junior, said she plans to stay at the university, crediting her choice of major for keeping her here.
“I’ve stayed every semester because, academically, I wanted to come here for nursing and if you try and transfer out for nursing it’s hard because you have to take more classes or it’s different plans and financial reasons as well,” Alonso said.
The fall to spring retention rate decreases due to December graduation, but for its size, MSU sits just above the national average of 70 percent.
