The Wilson school of nursing celebrated another great achievement this semester. All students who took the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification exam passed. They scored higher than the national average for the second year in a row. Debra Walker, graduate coordinator for the Wilson school of nursing said the program is not easy, yet she is pleased with the results.
“I’m very proud of them. They’ve studied very hard. It’s a very difficult program, it’s one of the most difficult programs there are. We have to essentially put a couple of year of medical school and a couple years residency into a three year program,” Walker said.
Senior nursing student Orisa La Touche has not taken the certification exam just yet, but said these results ease her fears about taking the exam in the future.
“Well it makes me feel good that all the suffering that I’m doing right now, all the hating I’m doing on the amount of work is going to pay off,” La Touche said.
Walker said the students that go through the nursing program will be providing a public service. Preceptors, professionals who work with the students during their clinical process, play a big role in their success.
“We have an obligation to the public, and that it to produce safe, quality, expert nurse practitioners. It is very gratifying to see them score this high on exams and that’s all and in part due to their preceptors,” Walker said.
Students have maintained a 100 percent pass rate for the last seven years.
