Our view: We applaud Student Government efforts to legitimize a fraud-tarnished homecoming election, but their efforts to make the election merit-based have failed because the qualifications of the candidates are not made public.
Sure, it’s just homecoming court. It’s fun, and it’s important to some, but we all know it’s not the most important campus election. But given the shaky history of our homecoming election, steps must be taken by the Student Government Association to ensure its integrity. And they have, but with one crucial misstep.
The GPA requirement was increased and nominees must submit evidence of community service, campus involvement and recommendation letters in an effort to ensure the election is more than a popularity contest, but because SGA chose to not make this information available publicly, their efforts are in vain.
SGA can’t seriously expect to give this election any semblance of depth if they don’t make the candidates’ qualifications public.
