Mustangs voted top 10 football team in Texas from MWSU Campus Watch on Vimeo.
Everything is bigger in Texas, including college football and the competition that comes with it. Footballscoop.com reporters have ranked who they thought were the top 10 college football teams in Texas and a few of the teams that made the list may raise some eyebrows.
The Mustangs came in at No. 5 in these rankings rated higher than Texas Tech, TCU and even the University of Texas. These rankings were not only based on who would win on the football field, but also factored in past success against the competition as well as the current state of the program.
Head Coach Bill Maskill credits this ranking to years of hard work and preparation.
“That top five was based on 11 years of hard work and it is an honor to all the coaches and players. And we got to play one game at a time and one week at a time,” Bill Maskill, head football coach.
Back to back Lone Star Conference championships and a 15-1 record in conference games since 2011 demonstrate Mustang dominance over the past few seasons. This success arises from hard work from both the players and the coaches as well as leadership from the team captains.
“I think all our seniors are doing a great job,” Maskill said. “We have three captains that have demonstrated that they can lead. I think that is a role when you get to be a senior that you have to step up and be a leader.”
The only other Division II team to make the top 10 was West Texas A&M, who the Mustangs are scheduled to play at Memorial Stadium on Nov. 16.
