As part of student engagement week, 24 teams are competing for the flag football championship, eight more teams than last year. Randy Canivel says this is an indication of the continued growth in recreational sports.
“We saw an increase this year especially with flag football, volleyball and soccer which is coming up. We’ve seen some increases partly due to our large freshman class,” says Canivel, director of Rec Sports
Rec sports staff created a website called “Team Sideline” to help students find game times, locations and keep up with wins and loses. The website also offers emergency e-mails and text messages to let students know when games are delayed or cancelled.
“They can see their schedules online, they don’t have to come up to the wellness center necessarily, they can check it on their mobile device and they can also ask questions and get involved with the process of Rec Sports,” Canivel says.
Divided into three divisions, including a men’s fraternity league, a men’s regular league and a women’s league, mostly made up of sorority teams, every student has the opportunity to be active while competing against others all year round.
“There’s more and more teams out here I see out here, trying to compete and it’s just good to see that out here. It’s people getting active instead of staying in their dorms or at their apartments all the time,” Dakota Liles, a Junior Kinesiology major.
Flag football will continue until the end of October. Canivel says he hopes students will stay involved with intramural sports throughout their college careers.
