The Student Government Association met Tuesday, Oct. 7. They discussed funding for the African Student Organization (ASO) and elected a new speaker for the senate.
The meeting opened with ASO motion to increase funding for their organization.
The ASO is hosting their annual Taste Of Africa event, a campus program designed to celebrate African culture and encourage student involvement, they requested $250 which after a majority vote, was granted.
After nominations and a majority vote, political science major Sarah Earle was elected to serve as the next Senate speaker.
“I’m running because I want to have an addition to the government and be more involved in this institution,” said Earle.
In addition the SGA recognized Chancellor Tedd L. Mitchell, following the passage of Joint Congress Resolution 60.01, which honors his leadership and historic tenure as the fifth Chancellor of the TTU system.
Under his guidance, the system experienced record growth, serving over 64,000 students across five institutions and achieved historic milestones such as founding the Hunt School of Dental Medicine and the TTU School of Veterinary Medicine.
Mitchell’s leadership advanced research, innovation and student success while strengthening community partnerships and expanding access to education across West Texas.
Recognized nationally for his service, excellence, and compassion, he leaves a lasting legacy of value-based leadership, earning him the title of Chancellor Emeritus in gratitude for his impact on Texas Higher Education.
Following his departure, Senator Brandon Creighton will take over as chancellor on Nov. 19.
The meeting concluded with an open floor for students to share announcements about upcoming events, highlighting the importance of supporting diverse student organizations and strengthening leadership across campus.
