Our View: When the weather got bad, the university officials handled the situation diligently and effectively to maintain the safety of everyone on campus. They maintained communication with everyone and made sure news got sent out immediately.
The Greater Wichita Falls Community saw about an inch of ice and sleet on roads this weekend, but when it came to maintaining the safety of students, staff and faculty the officials made sure there would be no issue.
Many people thought that just because there was only an inch of ice and sleet on the roads we should have had school. But according to the Common Data set for the Fall of 2012, 77 percent of our undergraduate students are commuters. There are people that travel from Olney, Electra, Henrietta and etc. everyday. These people traverse the roads that aren’t traveled as often as the highways and streets in Wichita Falls.
Chief of University Police Dan Williams traveled the roads less traveled Tuesday morning and helped decide that these roads were not safe for anyone to try to travel to campus. Also the streets and parking lots on campus this morning were a solid sheet of ice and sleet making it impossible to see the lines for parking spots. These conditions were not safe for anyone to travel on.
University Officials made the correct call though it seemed half-way through the day it was a waste of lecture time. They maintained the safety of everyone that would be traveling today. They also made sure that they released the information in a timely manner. Though the call to close classes on Tuesday morning came at 9:15 a.m. they had until 11 a.m. to cancel classes because they had already called a delay Monday night at 5:05 p.m.
The timely and diligent manner that officials went about making the call was perfect. Thank you maintaining the safety of everyone involved.
