Openly Carrying Guns on College Campuses from MWSU Campus Watch on Vimeo.
From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Florida State University, school shootings are more frequent. Last spring, MSU fell victim to a shooting scare which has brought forth mixed feelings from students and staff about the discretion of guns on campus.
“Everybody has the right to protect themselves but then again with having the extra guns on campus, there will be more accidents because people won’t be as trained so right now I think it’s better not to have them on campus,” Police Sergeant Albert Jimenes said.
But some students think it should be the other way around.
“Campuses should encourage conceal/carry. It brings down crime rates and college campuses are usually pretty unsafe places; if you think about the incidents we’ve had, conceal/carry would definitely help students to make them feel safer on campus,” master’s student in biology Marc Thibbs said.
“What person that has decided to make threats or shoot somebody- they’re not thinking rationally, they’re not going to care what the law says, so they’re going to shoot people either way, they’re going to find a way to do it,” senior in exercise physiology Jeremy Veine said.
So whether you believe in using guns to protect yourself or believe that they’ll only bring more harm, carrying open or concealed guns on any college campus in the state of Texas is illegal.

The campus carry bill that passed is not open carry. It is concealed carry only. Yes, open carry passed and so did campus carry, but if both were to pass then campus carry would be concealed carry. Make sure you have the facts before you write an article over it.
My opinion is allowing campus carry is a very good thing. One of the main reasons schools are a target to shooters is the fact that guns are not legally allowed so law abiding citizens cannot defend themselves in case of an attack. If a person has made up their mind to kill several people then a law such as “gun free zones” wouldn’t phase their decisions either way. The argument that more people with guns would cause chaos by having people trying to be a hero is false. A CHL holder has passed several tests and background checks and has the knowledge of what to do in a situation.
