The faculty directory was taken offline in mid-November after it was reported that the page was hacked. After being notified about the situation, Matt Shirey, webmaster, says he spent most of Wednesday fixing the compromised page.
“We are actually already redesigning the website for the profiles to keep from further things like that happening ever again,” Shirey says.
Shirey says no secure information was lost during the incident and the vulnerable area of the site has been addressed. He also says that the individual was only able to add an extra hyperlink that took viewers to a pharmaceutical website.
“What they put on there more or less was, I believe, to have fun or to see what they could do and they found a vulnerability and exploited it.”
To help students from getting hacked Shirey gave this tip.
“Don’t use the same password over and over and over for everything. Make sure that everything you have out there kind of has a different password. People once they find one password, they try it on everything and a lot of people use the same password everywhere”
He also adds that you check your privacy settings on your social media accounts to make sure the security is protecting you from any online hackers.
