Jefe’s is a Mexican restaurant located on the corner of Southwest Parkway and Fairway Boulevard. They serve anything from tacos to burritos and on Saturday nights they have salsa dancing.
When my friend and I walked in, the first thing we noticed was the dining area, decorated from front to back with Hispanic culture accompanied with Latin music playing in the background. The ambiance combined with the food helped provide me with a wonderful cultural experience.
The waiter brought out a mountain of chips and individual bowls of salsa that in the words of Pops from the movie Friday After Next, “tastes so good, makes you wanna slap yo mama.” Both the chips and salsa were homemade. The salsa had a kick of spice side that kept me wanting more. It’s more enjoyable when restaurants bring out individual bowls of salsa.
I ordered the quesadilla. It was loaded with peppers, onions, chicken and cheese. Each bite tasted better than the previous. The chicken was tender and juicy. Since the quesadilla was stuffed with veggies and chicken, I was full after two of the four pieces. The meal was accompanied by beans and rice. The re-fried beans were made exactly how I like them, with actual beans, they didn’t look like paste from a can.
I had the left over quesadillas for lunch the next day and they still tasted great.
My friend got the pick three. He went with a taco, tamale and enchilada along with re-fried beans and rice. Unfortunately the tamale was dry and not very appetizing. The enchilada and taco, while being very basic, were pretty good. The sauce on his enchilada was supposed to be their hottest. It was not that spicy.
The food we ordered was good for the most part, however, I’d say the chips and salsa was most memorable. None of the main course blew me away.
If margaritas are your thing, Jefe’s has happy hour from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and all day Saturday. A 16-ounce margarita for $1.99 was an amazing deal. Although the margaritas tasted like they were pre-made, I couldn’t complain about the price.
The food was great, the experience was what I would expect of a Mexican restaurant. I would recommend Jefe’s to anyone, especially the happy hour seekers. Or if you enjoy salsa dancing, enjoy the margaritas and dance floor.
