Last Saturday morning instructors with Universal Kempo Karate hosted a free self-defense class in D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Although attendance was small, the class still had much to offer.
“Women’s self defense is one of the many self defense classes we offer to help better people. What we’re trying to do is make women more aware and empower them to give them a little bit more confidence to enter certain situations by just giving them basic self defense techniques,” said Erik Watts, assistant chief instructor.
Watts’ son Dylan, mechanical engineering freshman, also helped teach the class. Dylan is an offensive lineman for the football team. He said his parents come from Colorado to watch each home game, so they talked with Police Chief Dan Williams about hosting the self-defense classes whenever they are in town.
Participants learned how to kick, use a wrist lock, throw an elbow and a few other things. Some of the tasks weren’t easy but the techniques and knowledge is vital once it comes to protecting your life.
“Showing them just to be aware of their surroundings and how to get away if something were to occur and to protect themselves,” said Albert Jimenes, campus police Sgt.
Watts said self-defense techniques can help someone stay safe, but there are easier ways to ensure safety.
“Always be aware of your surroundings and travel in groups,” Watts said.
