Although this past weekend might have been about chocolate bunnies and a day off of work for some students , it was about a more spiritual awareness in the time leading up to Easter. This process, known as Lent is where participating Catholics partake in some soul searching, while abstaining from a vice or something they enjoy for the forty days leading up to Easter. This process of fasting and moderation helps the individual get closer to God, while improving their overall spiritual being.
For senior Adam Olson, it was a great time to give up one particular bad habit, while following a family tradition.
Olson says, “Lent is something my family always grew up doing and I always thought it was really important for the Catholic religion. It doesn’t hurt that I gave up fast food to lose a little weight, also.”
Not all students might have been successful in giving up something for forty days and Associate Pastor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Father Moloney says that is quite alright.
Moloney says “We are human and each day is a new day so one day at a time Dear Lord. The fact is yes, humanity has weakness and weakness is a part of sinful tendencies. So we fall, but we can also rise again.”
About the experience as a whole, Olson had one thing to say: “It’s good for the soul.”
