OUR VIEW: While asking non-freshmen to move out of their dorm rooms is far from ideal, it’s the best option until the new dorm building is constructed.
As the incoming freshmen class continues to grow, so do the demands for an increased amount of on-campus housing. Unfortunately the freshmen class is growing too fast for the number of beds available on campus, putting housing administrators in the awkward position of having to ask non-freshmen residents to move out of the residence halls into more expensive on-campus apartments or off campus.
Students pay a lot of money to live on campus, so asking them to move out just because university officials are not prepared to take on a larger class of residents is just, well, cheap.
We recognize the predicament housing officials are dealing with, but the plan to construct a new residence hall should have been put into motion much sooner. Administrators knew that MSU began transitioning into a resident campus about 10 years ago.
Housing has doubled in those 10 years, but a new residence hall should have been built sooner if housing administrators insist on reserving on-campus dorms for freshmen only. Now, administrators need to focus on making the move to Mustang Village economical for non-freshmen and making it safe and convenient.
