MSU prepares to travel to the LSC tournament from MWSU Campus Watch on Vimeo.
Preparation is the key for any team to accomplish a goal. For the Mustang basketball teams, that goal is to win another conference championship, something the players and coaches have been working toward all season. The Mustangs travel to Allen, Texas on March 5 to take on their conference foes in the Lone Star Conference championship.
“It is really an exciting event to get there because you know what you have done to get there as a team. You finally get another opportunity to play some rivals in your conference that you may not have had success against during your season,” Noel Johnson, head women’s basketball coach, said.
Last year the Mustangs fell short to Tarleton in the championship game 53-50 but earned a bid into the NCAA tournament. The Lady Mustangs beat West Texas in an 85-83 comeback win in overtime for the team’s first conference championship in 12 seasons.
“This could be the last game of your season. So it puts a huge importance on what this tournament is about,” Johnson said. “But it also gives us an opportunity to get into the NCAA tournament with an automatic bid.”
For Monzaigo Williams, senior guard on the men’s team, it is all about taking it one game at a time.
“It’s going to be tough. We have a game on Saturday that is a must win for us. Then we turn around and play on Wednesday so we just have to prepare ourselves and be ready for anything they throw at us,” Williams said.
The Mustangs play Cameron University in the final game of the regular season before the LSC tournament.
