CVS Remains On Top Despite Sudden News (Stand-Up) from MWSU Campus Watch on Vimeo.
CVS is the first U.S. drugstore chain to drop tobacco products. Some consider this a risky move, but others say it will increase the company’s profit in the long-term.
According to TIME magazine, CVS stocks have risen since their sudden announcement.
Campus Relay for Life Organizer Rachel Brown says with smoking, the risks are endless.
“If smoking rates stay consistent with what they are now, in young adults, approximately 5.6 million Americans that are currently under 18 years old will die prematurely from Cancer related deaths,” Brown said.
Theater student Carter Wallace says smoking was a habit he picked up four years ago. Wallace has since made the choice to endorse a healthier lifestyle for both himself and his wallet.
“I’ve known for several years that I need to quit but it’s just been a habit that I can’t seem to break and then the cost of cigarettes really, when I look at it over a month – is outrageous how much I spend on it, so I quit for that reason also,” Wallace said.
The university promotes a tobacco-free campus.
