Nicholas Laske has been playing his guitar for the past five years, but he was finally able to show off his talents earlier this month at the talent showcase.
“I joined it because I really wanted to experience the opportunity. It really helps out when you’re getting on stage to get over your nerves, like when you haven’t played in forever. It helps you get back into it and get more serious,” Laske said.
The Black Student Union sponsored the talent showcase to help promote their small organization.
“Basically we just did the talent show because were BSU and were a small organization and were trying to get our name known and get a good reputation for us,” Christina Horn, BSU president, said.
The talent show was open to the public and anybody was invited to participate in the event. During the event, questions were asked to help people get a better understanding of black history and culture.
“Even though it is black history month, like we just want to be culturalized and invite everybody to showcase their talents. It doesn’t just have to be a black thing, it can be anybody. We just want people to come out and see what were about and just see what black history is about,” Horn said.
The Black Student Union also used the event as a fundraiser to help make better events in the future.
“We’re such a small organization. We don’t have any money at the current moment, so what we did was just come up with our own money from this. So that’s the whole point of us doing the fundraiser, so we can build money into our organization to do bigger and better things,” Horn said.
