Humane society volunteers are working hard to help the animals in need from MWSU Campus Watch on Vimeo.
Meet Brodi, a German shepherd waiting patiently for a loving home. He is just one of the cats and dogs anticipating adoption at the Humane Society of Wichita County.
Staff members and local volunteers see their fair share of abandoned animals. Members of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon volunteer twice a week at the shelter that is 40 years old. Matt Oliver says he has always been a dog lover, and volunteering is a way for him to give back to the Wichita Falls community.
“I’ve grown up with four dogs, three cats so I’m used to it. Coming out here is kind of like a stress relief from the semester,” Oliver, junior in criminal justice, said.
Staff member Kimber Hopkins says the adoption of some 1,200 animals per year is possible with the help of donations, volunteers and businesses in the Wichita County area.
“Our volunteers come in, help socialize them and play with them, get their mind off different things so they don’t become shelter crazy,” Hopkins said.
Today, 91 dogs and cats are in need of a home. Volunteers play with the animals by taking them out of their cages, and give them the attention they are in need of. Oliver says his own dogs give him a reason to volunteer.
“Especially when we have a large group of guys out here, the dogs start to get really attached to us, they don’t want us to leave, and as you can tell they start whining as soon as one of us leaves.”
