MSU Police Jurisdiction Covers Entire County from MWSU Campus Watch on Vimeo.
The campus police are able to issue tickets and citations on campus whenever they see fit. They are able to do this off campus as well.
The jurisdiction of MSU police extends beyond the campus to the entire county.
“That is correct, we have full police powers just as any other police officer in the state of Texas does,” Police Chief Dan Williams said.
However, some students believe that the police shouldn’t have jurisdiction beyond the campus.
“I understand if something happens on campus and they have to follow them off campus, but, I feel like if you speed through a red light down the street from campus, I feel like you shouldn’t get a ticket from the MSU cops, you should get a ticket from the Wichita Falls cops,” sophomore in account Brittany Garrett said.
When writing tickets off campus, the money goes to the city and not to the university.
The police not only have authority throughout Wichita County, but also in Brewster and Presidio counties as well.
