Although Homecoming week is usually centered around the football team, two other sports teams gave a preview of the upcoming season at Thursday night’s Mustang Madness event.
Students turned out at the coliseum after the torchlight parade and bonfire for an event that had very little to do with homecoming, and everything to do with school spirit.
“It’s a basketball preview for men’s and women’s basketball. This is our first year having it and we just want the students to come out and get to know the players and come out and support us,” volleyball head coach Venera Flores-Stafford says.
Other teams as well as the band, and cheerleaders played a role in the event.
Mustang Madness featured an introduction of both the men’s and women’s teams, court demonstrations, and a slam-dunk contest.
Coordinators and students say they were surprised at event’s attendance.
“I think it’s really good. There are a lot of people here,” pre-pharmacy junior Ashlee Davis says.
Although the turnout to the event was higher than expected some students still weren’t sure what Mustang Madness was all about.
“I did not know anything about it. I head it was kind of like a carnival is what I heard, so I didn’t really know anything about it,” Business Freshman Heather Nix says. While some students attended to see what the Mustang Madness was about, or to show their support for the basketball teams, some students had other reasons in mind.”Just to have a good time with my sister and to see a bonfire. Mustang Madness, for ice-cream. Ice-cream and free t-shirts,” education freshman Aubrey Rhine says.
“I survived Mustang Madness 20-13,” Flores-Stafford says.
