MSU SGA makes trip to D.C from MWSU Campus Watch on Vimeo.
Student government officials were called to Washington D.c, and not even a partial government shutdown could stop them as S.GA members from across the country were in Washington D.C on October 5th for the annual American student government association (ASGA) national summit. MSU SGA vice president, Leona Sandiford said, one of the points highlighted in the summit was that most schools suffer from the same issues.
“A lot of the students are not aware what the student government is about. Like, they don’t really know our roles; they don’t what we stand for. I don’t think the student knows that there is a student body that represents them,” Sandiford said.
According to Sandiford, this is one of the reasons why the SGA attends the summit, to learn to engage the student population more.
“It was very helpful hearing from other senators (about) and their roles on campus and their involvements; their networking helped. Especially in the area of dealing with other students our age, they don’t feel like they can come to you,” Sandiford said.
The visit could not have come at a more interesting time, as on October 1 the nation entered its first partial government shutdown in seventeen years.According to Sandiford, the summit was not affected by the shutdown, but the closure of monuments and other national landmarks did cut down on the site seeing, organized outside of the summit workshops.
