A record 51 countries are represented on campus this semester including students from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Carribean Islands.
Multicultural Coordinator Shontesa Jones says that the different organizations on campus help international students find a sense of home in a place so far away.
“Organizations like CSO. This year they are planning Hispanic heritage month. That’s a good feeder for diverse conversations and to really open a student’s mind” Jones says.
Jones says that while many cultures and countries are represented she sees a big problem with the diversity of the student population on campus.
“We are growing in international students but we could grow in minority students life African-american students which is declining and Hispanic students which is declining also” Jones says.
She says that efforts should be made to encourage a diverse population at the university, and make students of all ethnicity feel welcome on campus.
“When they get here or get somewhere and they feel like there’s nobody like me, so why should I stay? And they they leave… to find that somewhere else” Jones says.
