To wrap up Black History Month on campus, members of the Black History Month Gala Committee are hosting the Black Excellence Gala on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. in Comanche Suites in Clark Student Center.

The committee responsible for the event is composed of 12 people including Allyson Green, president of  the black student union.

Green said said, “The Black Excellence Gala is hosted to promote and bring together the black community on campus. It is also a celebration for those that are receiving awards, all of the organizations that put in hard work for the month of February and to simply celebrate black excellence.”

Every year, the committee hosts the formal event. Tickets are on sale for $10 for students and $20 for faculty, staff and guests, available in CSC 194 or Bea Wood Hall 131.

Green said she expects about 100 people to attend because “the same amount of people that have showed up in the past years as well.”

Food will be served with a main course that includes grilled chicken and there is a separate menu for those who are vegetarian or vegan.

Halie Aldridge, BSU senator, said in previous years there has been a choir as well as a guest speaker.

“I went both previous years. I had a lot of fun. I went with a friend and we got a black and red mug the first year and the second year they gave us a notebook,” Aldridge said.

Aldridge said she hopes gala is hosted again next next year because it helps represent black people on campus and celebrate black excellence.
