Horses and guns don’t usually come to mind when talking sports, but at this years annual Cowboy True event, cowboy mounted shooting was a popular competition. Cowboy True was founded in 2011 by Wichita Falls native and MSU graduate Dan Shores and was held last Friday and Saturday at the J.S. Bridwell Agricultural Center. Cowboy mounted shooting is a main attraction at Cowboy True, and involves a rider shooting blank ammunition at balloons for points.
“I was a barrel racer and I saw that and I thought, ‘That is the coolest thing, I want to do that’,” said participant Terry Ogle.
“There’s shooting events that aren’t on horseback and I think the only difference is that we are,” said participant Wanda Lynn.
Although not a common sport in which students participate in, cowboy mounted shooting provides the rare opportunity to mix horses, guns, and balloons all in one competition.
