The Philadelphia Eagles brought their A-game to Super Bowl LIX, dominating over the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 on Saturday, Feb. 9.
After winning the last two titles of the Super Bowl, the Chiefs were looking to make history with an unprecedented three-peat success, but their Philadelphia rivals had different plans.
The last time the Eagles lifted the SuperBowl trophy was in 2018 under head coach Doug Peterson. In 2021, Nick Sirianni stepped into the head coach position in place of Peterson, for what seemed to look like a promising future for the Philly team. And the results came through shortly after.
In 2023, the Eagles found themselves inches away from another Super Bowl title, but it wasn’t meant to be just yet. After suffering a devastating 38-35 defeat two years ago from the Chiefs, the Eagles were not going to let history repeat itself in this year’s championship.
For the Chiefs, this year marked the chance to achieve something that has never been done before in NFL history, winning three Super Bowl titles back-to-back-to-back. The Chiefs’ epic run started in 2023 after emerging victorious in the Chiefs v. Eagles showdown and once again against the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.
The Chiefs star quarterback and 3-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes was categorically outplayed throughout the entire game after a series of high-quality defensive plays delivered by the Eagles.
However, compared to his previous NFL games, the 29-year-old quarterback had considerably underperformed at this year’s Super Bowl.
Mahomes committed crucial blunders that sunk his team beyond salvation, starting with a pick-six interception in the second quarter, the first one for Mahomes had thrown during a postseason game. He seemed to recover in the next half, but the lead was too far out of reach for the Chiefs to make a strong comeback.
For the Eagles, it looked like things couldn’t have gone any better. The defensive line showed up and dominated from start to finish, sacking Mahomes a total of six times, the most he has ever taken in his career.
The man of the hour for the Philly team was none other than quarterback Jalen Hurts who was named Super Bowl MVP after his outstanding performance. Hurts finished the game posting 221 yards passing, two touchdowns and 72 yards rushing. His rushing yards set the record for most yards rushed by a QB in Super Bowl history, breaking his own previous record of 70 yards rushing.
With another Super Bowl game in the books, it remains to be seen which team will be the first to make NFL history, securing a threepeat. Right now, the Eagles have an edge with this year’s title safely secured, but if the Chiefs performance has taught NFL fans anything, it’s how unpredictable football can get. It will be interesting to see what matchup Super Bowl LX bring to the table next year.
