The Student Alumni Council’s trunk or treat brought some 700 people to the Hardin parking lot with 16 cars and volunteers giving out candy on Oct. 30.

“We thought it would be cool to help out with community service,” Jeffrey Hamon, SAC executive chair and exercise physiology senior, said. “It’s the first time this has ever happened on campus. For us to plan it and get it all together we were looking for just anyone to join and do it. I reached out to multiple organizations and we got it figured out.”

According to Desiree Harris, SAC traditions chair and biology sophomore, the goal of SAC is to get the community and alumni involved on campus. Harris said she wants to bring back old traditions such as putting a penny on top of the sunwatcher statue, but also incorporate new traditions such as trunk or treat.

“The community gets to meet organizations and see what MSU is really about,” Harris said. “A lot of people just think that MSU is just a school behind some neighborhoods. Not many people really know what we do or what we stand for so we try to give back to the community.”

According to Juan Parra, president of Kappa Pi and graphic design junior, trunk or treat is a great way to get involved in the community while also getting your organizations name out there.

“It’s important for us to be a member of our community,” Jennifer First, respiratory care junior, said. “Respiratory care is a very small program and we get overlooked often. This is our time to put our name out there and let people know that we exist.”

According to First, more people showed up than she had anticipated. She said that it is amazing that so many people are willing to show support not only for the community, but for the university.

“I think it’s absolutely great,” Steven Ehlert, Residence Hall Association president and criminal justice senior, said. “It’s one of the biggest turnouts I’ve seen, and it’s a great thing to do on campus. RHA will definitely participate next year.”
