As one of the random, “novelty” events before finals, members of the University Programming Board hosted a zip line April 19. Around 150 students participated at the event on the Jesse Rogers Promenade, slightly fewer than the 200 organizers originally expected. The zip line cost $3,000 for the four-hour event, from the Cinema and Novelty budget of UPB. The original location of the event was at the free play field but because of the rain making the area muddy it was moved to Jesse Rogers Promenade.
Sydney Ellis, nursing freshman, Expectations: “I expected it to be a little bit harder than it was but it was a lot easier, I saw the signs on the UPB board and twitter. I’ve also been on one that was 150ft., so I thought this shouldn’t be that bad.” From the top, down: “ I was very nervous at the top but I felt relief when I landed.”
Anne Tran, Pre-med freshman, Why’d you come:“It was advertised by UPB and it looked interesting so I came out.” Expectations and experience:“ I thought it was going to be really scary and the more I went up the more I got scared but when I actually did it was pretty great.” From the top, down: “At the top it felt scary and exciting, but when I landed I felt accomplished because they said I was the first girl to do it right so far.”
Ian Graves, mechanical engineering freshman, Why’d you come:“I seen a big zip line so I figured why not but I expected it to be a little bit longer.” From the top, down: “When I got to the top I felt nervous because I’m afraid of heights, I got on because why not. I felt like that spring was going to pull me back up when I reached the ground. I kept my cowboy hat on because well I didn’t really have no were to put it.”
Alex Torres, education sophomore, Expectations: “To be honest I thought it was gonna be super high up but it was still a rush. From the top, down: “When I got to the top I thought it was going to be a piece of cake and when I landed I felt relieved.” Three words to describe event: “fun, wild, rush.”
Ricky Ruiz, nursing senior, Expectations: “I thought it would it be higher and longer and pretty fun but its pretty cool still.” From the top, down “I was scared because I’m scared of heights but I still like to do stuff, I like the adrenaline rush. I was pretty exhilarating and I was wearing white shoes so I was like oh crap I got grass stains on them. Why’d you come:“ I saw it on Instagram page and I was tired of studying.”
Kenadi Campbell, computer science sophomore, Expectations:“I expected that it was gonna be taller, I was upset that it’s short but I’m working it and was bored, so there’s nothing to do but ride it over and over again.” From the top, down: “I wished it was taller, I like heights, I was stressed out because my feet skid across the ground and I’m wearing white shoes and I probably messed them up. And I stay in Sundance that is out in Timbuktu, which is too far to walk to.”
Whitney Hogue, vocal education senior, Expectations: “I expected it to be higher, I was kind of scared that I wouldn’t be able to do it because I was too tall.” From the top, down: “Honestly through my head I thought great, great, long legs, great then I started feeling my legs skidding across the ground and its wet and there’s like a grass stain on my leg now, but I still had fun.” Three words to describe event:“super freaking awesome.”
