As one of the random, “novelty” events before finals, members of the University Programming Board hosted a zip line April 19. Around 150 students participated at the event on the Jesse Rogers Promenade, slightly fewer than the 200 organizers originally expected. The zip line cost $3,000 for the four-hour event, from the Cinema and Novelty budget of UPB. The original location of the event was at the free play field but because of the rain making the area muddy it was moved to Jesse Rogers Promenade.
Ā Sydney Ellis, nursing freshman, Expectations: āI expected it to be a little bit harder than it was but it was a lot easier, I saw the signs on the UPB board and twitter. Iāve also been on one that was 150ft., so I thought this shouldnāt be that bad.ā From the top, down: ā I was very nervous at the top but I felt relief when I landed.ā
Anne Tran, Pre-med freshman, Whyād you come:āIt was advertised by UPB and it looked interesting so I came out.ā Expectations and experience:ā I thought it was going to be really scary and the more I went up the more I got scared but when I actually did it was pretty great.ā From the top, down: āAt the top it felt scary and exciting, but when I landed I felt accomplished because they said I was the first girl to do it right so far.ā
Ā Ian Graves, mechanical engineering freshman, Whyād you come:āI seen a big zip line so I figured why not but I expected it to be a little bit longer.ā From the top, down: āWhen I got to the top I felt nervous because Iām afraid of heights, I got on because why not. I felt like that spring was going to pull me back up when I reached the ground. I kept my cowboy hat on because well I didnāt really have no were to put it.ā
Alex Torres, education sophomore, Expectations: āTo be honest I thought it was gonna be super high up but it was still a rush. From the top, down: āWhen I got to the top I thought it was going to be a piece of cake and when I landed I felt relieved.ā Three words to describe event: āfun, wild, rush.ā
Ricky Ruiz, nursing senior, Expectations: āI thought it would it be higher and longer and pretty fun but its pretty cool still.ā From the top, down āI was scared because Iām scared of heights but I still like to do stuff, I like the adrenaline rush. I was pretty exhilarating and I was wearing white shoes so I was like oh crap I got grass stains on them. Whyād you come:ā I saw it on Instagram page and I was tired of studying.ā
Ā Kenadi Campbell, computer science sophomore, Expectations:āI expected that it was gonna be taller, I was upset that itās short but Iām working it and was bored, so thereās nothing to do but ride it over and over again.ā From the top, down: āI wished it was taller, I like heights, I was stressed out because my feet skid across the ground and Iām wearing white shoes and I probably messed them up. And I stay in Sundance that is out in Timbuktu, which is too far to walk to.ā
Whitney Hogue, vocal education senior, Expectations: āI expected it to be higher, I was kind of scared that I wouldnāt be able to do it because I was too tall.ā From the top, down: āHonestly through my head I thought great, great, long legs, great then I started feeling my legs skidding across the ground and its wet and thereās like a grass stain on my leg now, but I still had fun.ā Three words to describe event:āsuper freaking awesome.ā
