Here in Texas we love some down home southern deep fried food and the Chicken Box provides locals with just what they need to satisfy that craving. From gizzards to chicken legs, they have some of the juiciest fried foods around.
When walking into Chicken Box I was greeted with exactly what I expected: A clean dining area, but nothing fancy. The place was packed for lunch. It was obvious that it is a favorite among many locals. We were in line for a good five minutes before we could even order.
I walked up to the counter where one lady was working the register and getting the food orders out to everyone. Even though she was busy, she still politely greeted my friend and I.
I ordered a five-piece chicken meal that came with a roll and drink, and I also ordered a side of macaroni and cheese.
The chicken came out on paper plates and boy, did it look delicious. The first bite into one of my chicken legs was unimaginable. The chicken had a crunchy fried breading and perfectly juicy, dark meat. I always go with dark meat because white meat is usually more dry. Each piece was better than the previous one, leaving me wanting more if only my stomach had more room.
The macaroni and cheese was made to perfection with white cheese. For a second I thought it didn’t have any cheese and almost took it back. The macaroni and cheese was a perfect companion to the chicken, and the cooks provide you with the perfect amount to not spoil your entire meal on this childhood favorite.
My friend took the road less traveled and got a full order of gizzards and a full order of liver. I was interested to try fried liver for the first time.
My friend gave me a couple gizzards and fried liver to try. The gizzards had a good breading layer and a good soft crunchiness when I bit into it. If you’ve never had gizzards before I recommend going with someone who like them, that way an entire order doesn’t go to waste if you don’t like them. The gizzards were good, but they are definitely not for everyone.
The liver, on the other hand, was better than I expected. It broke apart as soon as I bit into it, and it wasn’t too tough. It had a bitter taste, but in a good way. I will definitely order them next time and I highly recommend trying it if you never have.
My meal was around $8 and my friend’s came out to about the same amount. For a filling lunch and a great price, the Chicken Box is perfect. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves juicy fried chicken and a classically friendly southern experience.
