Homecoming Traditions: Tailgating from MWSU Campus Watch on Vimeo.
The Wild West Show is coming to campus beginning October 14th. Homecoming week is right around the corner and students are preparing for their homecoming traditions. The football team is practicing for the big game, and the band is preparing for the half time show. But one way students show their school spirit is the tailgate before the football game. Sophomore Clayton Brown notices a difference in the student body during the homecoming week.
“It’s a lot of people excited about MSU, that’s the great thing about homecoming, it actually you know gets out the school spirit, that really isn’t here all the time,” Brown said.
There are plenty of events during homecoming week, where students can show their school spirit. The most important event however, would be the football game. Fans arrive two to three hours prior to kick off to set up their grills and sets up their tents for the pre-game tailgate.
But what makes a good tailgating experience?
“Must haves for a tailgate goes as follows, first off you need good food, second good music, and third, you know you got to have good friends out there to have a good time,” Brown said.
For junior, athletic training student Cameron Hieb it comes down to just one thing.
“The essentials to have at a tailgate are of course beer, because we’re in college,” Hieb said.
But alcohol isn’t what it is all about. Junior Machaela Welch tailgating brings together family and friends.
“Usually we try and have one of our girls family members cook for us, if we have family there it makes it more special for us,” Welch said.
Dental hygiene student Jessica Grimstead enjoys tailgating when she gets a break from her busy schedule.
“It’s just a time to hang out with everybody times that when work takes me away from everybody else it’s something that I can do on the weekends and have a good time, but still fell connected at the same time,” Grimstead said.
Last year rain delayed tailgating, but students say they will still be out there cheering on the mustangs.
“Probably looking like buffoons out in the rain,” Grimstead said.
Mark your calendars, Saturday October 19th Midwestern football players will step on the field at Memorial Stadium while over fourteen thousand fans will be cheering them on.
