The women’s soccer team “dusted” the Dustdevils with a 4-0 win against against Texas A&M International University on Sept. 10.

The first half of the game was slow paced, with only one goal made at the 19:02 mark by Destinee Williamson, forward and criminal justice senior. 

“In our next game, we need to start off with the energy right off the bat,” Williamson said. “I think that’s why we were getting beat as much as we were in the first half. Luckily they didn’t score on us.”

Throughout the game, goalkeeper Courtney Burnette, nursing and Spanish senior, managed to stop 13 attempted shots. This gave the Mustangs the 4-0 shutout they were striving for.

“We have been working hard on our defense and learning new spots on the field,” Burnette said. “I think we now have a good setup that works for us. It definitely showed that the women worked hard to earn their win.”

By the second half, the communication and energy on the field remarkably increased, according to Damian Clarke, head coach. Defense players focused on the placement of their teammates, and three shots were made in the second half to bring the score to 4-0. Hanna Mattinson, forward and marketing sophomore, made the last goal with 40 seconds left in the game.

“The communication in the first half was poor and we could have done more work,” Clarke said. “ This changed in the second half as the players showed more depth and communication.”

The Mustangs will return to Stangs Park on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. against Oklahoma Baptist University.
