Hope Connection, a campus social work organization, is on a mission to help struggling mothers provide diapers for their children by holding a diaper drive until Oct. 12, and they are seeking student help.
“I got the idea because I observed mothers who were desperate and social workers who were paying out of pocket to provide diapers,” said Leigh Ann Hope, social work visiting professor. “We have all heard of food drives, but not diaper drives.”
Hope said their group aims to educate people on the need for diapers, connect child activists, develop fundraising activities, and most importantly, provide direct relief.
Hope said the partnerships already made from this group have been wonderful and continue to show great support.
“I have talked to moms who were so desperate for diapers they were donating plasma to have money for them,” Hope said.
Chi Omega sorority, First Baptist Church, University United Methodist Church, the Girl Scouts, and students have already donated a sizable amount of diapers.
The diaper drive will benefit local charities such as Inheritance Adoption, Faith Refuge, First Step, Rainbow House and the Children’s Aid Society.
“The community and university support has thrilled and blown us all away,” Hope said. “Our hearts have been melting by the generosity.”
Students can take diapers to Leigh Ann Hope’s office in Martin Hall room 103 or to the Girl Scouts main office at 2106 Kemp Blvd.
