Student government sets goals for year from MWSU Campus Watch on Vimeo.
The Student Government Association is a student-run organization that oversees all of the other organizations on campus. But what they actually do may be a mystery to most students.
“SGA is really the student organization that you should go to for getting your voice heard and basically your representation,” said Student Government President Melody Coffey. “We can get a lot of stuff done that students don’t know about but this year we’re hoping that we can get that out to them, that they actually know that we can do things for them.”
At the SGA Kickoff event last Tuesday, more than half of the 56 people that were at the event vocally expressed an interest in increasing awareness about SGA around campus.
Coffey says their goals include reaching out to students to increase awareness through the use of their publicity, Campus Culture and Campus Environment committees. They want to plan events for students and would like to see more organizations collaborate with each other.
“For example, the Vice President Leona (Sandiford) is trying to get Caribfest more involved with the fraternity and sorority life as well. So we get those people involved because the Caribbean Student Organization is one of the biggest on campus as well as fraternities and sororities so if you get all the biggest organizations together you’re really going to have a great event,” Coffey said.
