Captain America: Brave New World is the latest entry in the Captain America franchise that many have been anticipating. Released on Feb. 14, “Brave New World” solidifies Anthony Mackie’s role as Captain America.
Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) goes on his first adventure as Captain America and it doesn’t go smoothly, because unlike Steve Rogers he has no super human serum. He fights for what he believes in, even if others don’t believe in him, just like Steve Rogers.
However, he isn’t alone. He’s joined by the new Falcon, Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez) In his new role he must learn how to be the Falcon and what it takes, also making it his own along the way.
A common theme seen in the movie is how Sam wants people to relate to him just being someone who’s just like everyone else. He learns that always taking orders is not always the best thing and that he needs to stand up for what he believes in even after being knocked down.
We see the film begin in typical “Captain America” fashion, setting up the story for the chaos about to ensue. The catalyst being the near assassination of the President Thaddeus Ross.
As Sam is on his way to figure out who is responsible, we see him getting to use the iconic shield. He makes swift work of his enemies and pushes on.
While trying to prevent a horrible event from occurring he has an aerial battle over Celestial Island. Seeing him flying around with his wings and the shield makes you want more.
He fights in a creative style using all of his resources to ensure his success, it makes you wonder what he’ll do next. Especially during the appearance of Red Hulk.
Which brings me to my top three favorite things about this movie, in no particular order. My first being the fight scenes, leave you wanting more.
Next has to be Mackie as Captain America. He takes a role we have seen only one other person play on the big screen and he truly makes it his own.
Lastly, the practical effects. They make a big difference when compared to digitally adding them later. Seeing this helps you feel more of the danger Captain America is in.
These few favorite things do not mean that there are not things wrong with this movie. The many rewrites it went through unfortunately lead to the whole potential of this story not being told.
The film also went through many reshoots, causing delay in the movie being released. However, the final product delivers a grounded Captain America movie and is worth a watch to form your own opinion.
I rate it 4 out of 5 mustangs, and I cannot wait to see more of Anthony Mackie’s Captain America.
