MSU women’s basketball fell 90-62 to UT Permian Basin Saturday, Jan. 20 at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Mustangs moved to 11-7 all-time against the Falcons, with the loss dropping MSU’s conference record this season to 4-8. The loss was the second in three days for the Mustangs after they fell to Angelo State on, Jan. 18.
The Falcons struggled early to put MSU away, leading only 23-18 at the end of the first quarter. However, that five-point deficit would soon balloon for the Mustangs as UTPB outscored MSU 21-5 in the second quarter, leading to a 43-23 halftime lead for the Falcons. UTPB continued to pull away in the third and fourth quarters, leading to the eventual 28-point loss for the Maroon and Gold. The loss extended MSU’s losing streak to three after losses to Angelo State and Eastern New Mexico.
Kertisa Amos led the Mustangs’ scoring efforts, recording 19 points, while Kyla Speights added another 15. Catalina Cortez scored 12, while the rest of the Mustangs beyond the three top scorers added just 16 points. UTPB had four players score double-digits, led by Morgan Helgesen’s 22 and Andreea Mancha’s 17.
The Mustangs will return to D.L. Ligon on Feb. 8 as they try to win a rematch against Eastern New Mexico.
