Greek Life volunteers to keep library open around the clock
As finals week approaches, Greek students will be volunteering in Moffett Library to extend hours.
The library will be open 24 hours for the week before finals and the week after finals.
Clara Latham, university librarian, said the library would be providing an adult supervisor and three Greek volunteers each night.
“We will monitor the use of the building and evaluate whether it is worth considering long hours at the end of the next semester,” Latham said.
After attending a national leadership convention in February, Taylor Duval, interfraternity council president, said he came up with the idea of making the library 24 hours during finals week.
The process, given to them by Latham, was to train students to know the day-to-day operation of Moffett Library, such as learning how to check out books to dealing with issues of noise complaints.
“It’s been a little bit of a process getting it done, but it’s been really good,” Duval said. We definitely met [the requirements]. We have training set up for the students and they will be personally trained by [Latham] and working with staff members. That way everyone is in accordance.”
This effort is completely voluntary for students involved in sororities and fraternities on campus, but Duval said a large excess of Greek students would be participating.
“This is something that is really being perused by the Greek community,” he said. “This is just us offering our help to the community on campus. The reason why we are doing this to do help everyone a chance to take advantage of it. We can help [students] by giving them a solid place to study.”
Duval, junior in mechanical engineering, said the 24-hour library project is all part of reshaping how the campus’ views on Greek life as a whole.
“What we really want to do is show people that we care about our grades,” Duval said. “I know that some of the grade support statistics shows [chapters] are average.”
According to Duval, since the campus Greek community is so unique, which most of its students having other commitments such as jobs so it is hard to balance.
“It also shows are commitment to our chapters,” he said. “We all have requirements, but a lot of times its just there are some many other variables in a lot of our lives so it’s tough to get our grades up. So this is one thing we are trying to show people that we care, even though sometimes the grade reports might be a little off or under par. We are legitimately working on it.”

Kudos to the members of the Greek community for making this happen. This type of student leadership is EXACTLY what “make it yours” means! I wish that more students would see the power in standing together and creating a plan for the MSU they would like to see. Great job, keep up the amazing progress being made!
