Monday Night Cru continues to inspires college youth
Cru, formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ, is a non-denominational Christian group geared towards converting students into leaders for Christ.
Cru was formed on the fundamental principles to encourage students everywhere to embrace the purpose, love and forgiveness God offers them in a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Every Monday night the group meets to have “Monday Night Cru” in the Clark Student Center Atrium from 8:30 – 10 p.m.
Monday Night Cru begins with a social that goes on until 9 p.m. Thereafter, the members gather together for a biblical message or break up into smaller groups for bible study. During the event the members have fun with icebreakers activities and they also spotlight members.
Justin Newsom, a junior in Kinesiology is the president and one of the founders of Cru’s subdivision. Newsom said he has always been active in his church and felt compelled to get involved on campus. He said he strongly believes it is important to have student based religion on campuses rather than just attending church.
“Just going to church is not enough. You can’t gain all you need when you go to church just once per week,” Newsom said. “You need to be invested into people. We have a small group of people you can talk to and share what is bothering you. It is always good to be able to talk to someone else. It also helps you have a bit more in-depth with God if you are struggling.”
Cru has been a part of campus since November 2011, and according to Newsom, “it gives you a chance to learn about god with other people.” The group focuses on three main areas discipleship, evangelism, and missions.
“We have a leadership team made up of eight to ten members, and all of us are suppose to have disciples to have a one on one discussion about god once a week,” Newsom said. “We try to teach people about the good work of God and try to share the good news.”
“It is a great way to get involved,” Jake Blackmon, sophomore in respiratory therapy, said. “As a Christian it helps me grow in my faith, get in the word and to just be with fellow believers, read the bible and just hang out.”
