Hour long finale ends seven season series of NBC comedy show
Liz Lemon and the gang will finally shut down The Girlie Show set for good on Thursday, as NBC will air the season and series finale of 30 Rock at 7 p.m.
The hour-long episode will close out one of television’s most creative and heavily underrated show of the past seven years.
While heralded as a critical darling, 30 Rock was never able to gain the ratings of competitors like The Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother.
During it’s seven season run, show creator and star Tina Fey took her real-life experiences as a writer for Saturday Night Live in the mid-90s and early-2000s and transferred them over to Lemon, an unlucky-in-love head writer of a similar sketch comedy show that exemplified a strong, female lead in a male-dominated world.
Lemon’s attempts to “have it all” put her through stressful, yet comedic, life situations like tumultuous breakups, sexual harassment work incidents and trouble with her actors. Lemon went through more in seven seasons than most people going through in a lifetime.
*Spoiler Alert*
The series finale does have a happy ending for Lemon, as she finally gets her wish of being a mother fulfilled by adopting two siblings with her newlywed husband Criss.
30 Rock was not a one-woman show, though. Male lead Alec Baldwin was able to flex his comedic chops as businessman Jack Donaghy in his quest for corporate dominance, and supporting actors Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski perfectly portrayed the narcissistic stars of TGS, Tracy Jordan and Jenna Maroney.
30 Rock’s strongest point was its ability to poke fun of traditional television and business conventions.
From the constant jabs of NBC being the last place network, to the blatant product placement gags on parent company GE and their own show sponsors.
Even with the show going off the air, the future of NBC’s comedy department is still promising.
New shows like 1600 Penn and Guys with Kids and fan favorites like Parks & Recreation and Community look to keep bringing the laughter to a television set near you.
