Texas Country favorite stops by Wichita Falls club
Every Thursday, Denim and Diamonds features a country artist to perform for the Wichita Falls community.
“The specific country band is chosen by corporate, and we just open our venue for them to play every week,” club Manager Jamie Lavery said.
On Jan. 31, Roger Creager took the stage to perform at 10:30 p.m. to promote his latest album, Surrender.
“I became a country artist because I just liked it and thought I was good enough at it to perform for others,” Creager said.
Creager became successful in the College Station area in 1998 and has performed his style of Texas country ever since and has been touring around the country for 15 years.
Creager has had a pilot license for three years and is able to fly to some of his concerts in order to perform.
“My favorite thing about touring is the freedom of the lifestyle and that I can do whatever I want,” Creager said. “One of the furthest places I’ve traveled by flying my own plane was from Houston, Texas to Pensacola, Florida.”
He has been able to tour with some band members that have performed with him for a long time, including his drummer, who has played with him for more than 14 years.
Ten songs make up his latest album, but Creager said the title track is his favorite.
“I feel like Surrender captures life very well and the lyrics are really meaningful,” Creager said.
He also has a favorite song from his set list to perform in front of an audience.
“Turn It Up always gets the crowd going because it’s a feel-good song,” Creager said.
Creager has many hobbies including skiing, surfing, mountain climbing and fishing, but performing as a country artist is his favorite.
“Playing is my favorite because it’s pure as driven snow,” he said.
Creager said he loves performing for his fans and his fans love to sing along with him.
“Roger Creager has a great stage presence and he makes eye contact to include people when he sings,” human resources graduate student Elizabeth Rogers said. “He has a lot of fun songs like The Everclear Song, but Creager also has some serious and meaningful songs such as Good Day for Sunsets and Surrender. He is so versatile.”
Denim and Diamonds allows locals to see their favorite country artists perform in town.
“There’s a lot of floor space with a separate dance area so you’re not restricted,” Rogers said.
She also added that she likes the convenience of watching a country performance locally instead of having to travel to big cities such as Dallas or Oklahoma City.
Other students enjoy the great view of the band performing.
“It’s small enough of a club that you can get closer to the stage and feel like you’re more connected to the band,” said Alexa Stout, a junior in general business.
