Lady Mustangs aim to extend winning streak.
As the mid-season mark approaches, the Lady Mustangs will be working hard to make a significant improvement to their season and finish strongly.
MSU is unbeaten in its last five conference games with vital victories over rivals.
Head women’s basketball coach Noel Johnson lauded her team for its fine display within the past few weeks.
“I’m really proud of these young ladies, how well they’ve played and adjusted through the first half of conference especially,” Johnson said. “We have done a good job preparing ourselves for the second half to set us up for hopefully a conference championship and a good seed in the conference tournament.”
Although the team currently has a better record than it did at this time last year, Johnson credits this season’s achievement partially to the leadership of the previous season.
“We weren’t where we were last year because we had some loses that were a little uncharacteristic of the maturity of the team that we had at the time,” she said. “But the way we responded to adversity last year is similar to the way we responded this year and a lot is based on the leadership of which the kids fed off from last year.”
Still, the Lady Mustangs have an amazing squad with a few players and standout.
Kirsti Degelia has been an offensive prodigy with an average of 17 points per game and a total of 52 points in her last two games. Andrea Carter and Shatoia Gober average 12 and nine points per game respectively. As a result of this, Johnson has a higher level of confidence in her team this season.
“I have a huge amount of confidence in my team they show me every day,” said Johnson. “I have no doubt when I put them in or we have a game plan that they’re going to do what they can to execute that game plan.”
“Kirsti Degelia is stepping up well right now, she’s hitting shots when we need them and she has great timing in creating chances for other teammates. Shatoai Gober is creating a lot for us and she’s doing a great job as far as being a spark for us when we need it. Andrea Carter is also a huge playmaker for us in the paint as far as not only her offence but also rebounding,” said Johnson.
The Lady Mustangs anticipate an outstanding second half of the season, when more competitive games take place.
“It’s the grind of the season as we are about to turn the corner of the second half of the conference,” said Johnson. “We don’t look ahead but continue to focus on what we do and who we are. We’ll take it game by game and continue to improve everyday in practice.”
Midwestern State is preparing to face Cameron University in back-to-back conference meetings. The Aggies have an impressive record this season thus Johnson and her coaching staff intend to go over several special drills with the team in preparation for this fixture.
“We’ll watch videos on Cameron. They’re playing very well at home so we’ll try to get used to their offensive plays and calls as well as defensive cues so our kids are prepared,” said Johnson. “We’ll go over those at practice and talk to the girls about some of the tendencies of the players and what they like to do and where we can hopefully attack them.”
Tipoff at Cameron University is set for 6 p.m. tonight before a rematch Saturday at 4 p.m. at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
