The Black Student Union will be holding a fashion and beauty expo in Comanche Suites, which will provide natural hair and makeup tips to students as well as a fashion show.
Maia Cook, athletic training junior and president of BSU, said, “Originally we wanted to do the expo during women’s history month for girls around campus, but due to room reservations, we had to push it back and it gave us more time to plan.”
The events will be held April 15-16. The first night will be the fashion show and the second night will be the actual beauty expo.
“It was kind of a long process. It was just a matter of finding designers and finding models and finding people to put on the expo, so just a matter of finding sponsors,” Cook said.
There are five vendors and two fashion designers. The vendors include Haute Societe, Mary Kay, IT Hair School, Runway Seven, and Slavage by GiGi. The fashion designers are Slavage by GiGi and Runway Seven.
Ricinda Turner, mass communication sophomore and senator for BSU, said, “We think the expo is a fun idea, because it’s not only fashion, but also hair and makeup as well, which will most likely draw in the ladies.”
There are 12 models for the fashion show. Model calls were held in February and throughout the month of March for interested ladies willing to participate.
Cook said, “When we do our fashion show, it gives you a chance to see the students in a different element, like people that you see every day you get to see them do something different.”
The models had their measures taken and the outfits are custom made to fit them.
Turner said, “We’re really happy that we have one student from MSU that is showing off her talent of sewing by designing clothes for the 12 models all by hand.”
BSU is selling $5 bands in Clark Student Center, which gives students access to both the fashion show and the beauty expo.
Turner said, “I believe the event will be successful, because it’s our first fashion and beauty expo that we’ve held here through BSU, so we really think it’s going to be a hit.”
Proceeds will be donated to First Step, a local women’s shelter in Wichita Falls.
