Students filed in, chattering amongst each other as they took their seats while music blasted through the speakers. Laughter began to fill CSC Comanche as comedian, Ronnie Jordan, took the stage and cracked a few jokes.
The Black Student Union and the University Programming Board hosted their third annual talent show on Feb. 18. With a turn out of about 100 students, they all watched as Jordan, who emceed the event, welcomed each student to the stage.
In between the acts singing, playing instruments, and even one poet, Jordan did a few stand up routines.
“We were looking for an event to do during black history month,” said Maia Cook, a junior in athletic training and president of the BSU. “The first year we did it, and it was really successful so we just decided to keep going because we never have anything like that on campus.”
The event was free to anyone on campus and had a better turn out than last year, which students had to pay to attend said Cook.
Auditions were held, but mostly everyone who auditioned performed.
“We did an audition kind of as a formality just to make sure it was appropriate,” said Cook. “But everybody got to do it.”
The show consisted of eight performers, mostly singers, and were judged by a panel of 4 judges.
While the judges deliberated, Jordan did a longer stand up. The audience laughed and cheered louder with each joke, and it ended with Jordan jokingly singing love songs to a wrapped pastry, making the audience erupt in cheers.
Finally, the judges returned and announced that Lowell Nash, a junior in mass communication, as the winner.
“It was my second year winning, so I’m pretty excited to win back to back titles,” said Nash. “There was a lot more talent this year.”
