It was indeed a great weekend for the Midwestern State basketball team, who edged a dramatic 57-51 victory over Tarleton State to claim the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament title. In addition to Saturday night’s victory, the Mustangs will host the South Central Regional.
But before the Mustangs were served the opportunity to thrash the Texans, they defeated the Lions of Texas A&M Commerce 64-52 in the quarterfinals. Michael Loyd made 16 points and three rebounds while JaMichael Rivers put in 15 points and nine rebounds as MSU dominated the Lions. Darrick Thomas and David Terrell contributed nine and eight points respectively.
The Mustangs then proceeded to beat the Aggies of Cameron 59-50 in the semi-finals. Loyd, again, led the fixture with 12 total points while Keonte’ Logan followed with ten points.
Then the Mustangs advanced to the anticipated championship game where they put down the Texans remarkably.
With a 57-51 score line, it is quite obvious that both teams played with an extraordinary sense of defense at the back of the minds. However, the Mustangs were able to feature three players with double figures. Rivers and Terrell both had 12 points while Loyd put 11 points on the scoreboard.
Brian Word and Fabian Wilson led the Texans with 16 points and nine points correspondingly but their effort was not enough to stop the Mustangs’ stampede.
The Mustangs will partake in the South Central Regional this Saturday at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
