After a disappointing loss at Eastern New Mexico, the Midwestern State basketball team was able to bounce back by defeating Cameron University last Wednesday night.
The Aggies’ visit to the D.L. Ligon Coliseum was tough for them as well as their hosts. Both teams went back and forth with taking the lead with the offence striving to make an impact in the Wednesday night brawl.
Thomas Colbert, JaMichael Rivers and Dejuan Plummer contributed seven points each to help the Mustangs gain 32 points in the first half, Michael Loyd was up close with six points to his name.
Loyd improved in the second half as he combined strength and hard work to get 13 points on the scoreboard. The guard led Midwestern State’s scoring with an overall 19 points. Milton Garner, on the other hand, impressed his side by outscoring everyone with 28 points.
In spite of Garner’s phenomenal performance, Darrick Thomas stole the thunder with a remarkable buzzer-beating rebound as the Mustangs edged an 82-80 victory over the Aggies.
The Mustangs returned the visit last Saturday and defeated Cameron University with an even larger margin in a game that ended 66-51.
Loyd was at his best as he claimed 16 easy points for MSU while teammate David Terrell put in 13 through the hoops.
While Loyd tallied the most points on the court, Colbert recorded the most rebounds as he diligently retrieved the ball 11 times.
The away victory put the Mustangs at a 15-1 on the season and 8-1 on the Lone Star conference play.
The Mustangs will visit Tarleton State this Saturday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
