The Midwestern State women’s basketball team secured back-to-back triumph against Cameron University at home and away. The Lady Mustangs had won seven straight games and were looking to maintain the winning streak.
Midwestern hosted the first contest which ended 46-41 to the relief of the Lady Mustangs and their fans. Kirsti Degelia led her team with 11 points to her name while Savannah Carver came close with seven.
Head Women’s Basketball Coach Noel Johnson lauded the efforts of Carver and Degelia.
“Savannah and Kirsti both had a great game and did well in scoring,” she said.
According to Johnson, eight players got to score in both games and this speaks well of the offense.
Cameron University’s Sabelle Diata, Julie Paunovic and Nicole Pendarvis combined efforts and were able to place ten points each on the scoreboard.
While other players focused on extending their team’s points, Shatoia Gober and Cierra Thomson focused on rebounds with ten and nine respectively.
Diata and Paunovic also singled themselves from the crowd with the former making 15 rebounds and the latter rebounding 12 times.
The Lady Mustangs traveled to Lawton, Oklahoma where they concluded their week by serving their hosts with a 65-58 win.
MSU took control of the rivalry by playing exceptionally well in game two.
Johnson based the improved scoreline on the fact that the offense did a better job attacking the glass.
Carver led the contest with a stunning 27-point game and still managed to snatch six rebounds. She was the only Lady Mustang to score in double figures last Saturday.
Diata, again, went ahead of her teammates by scoring 14 points and getting 13 rebounds.
Alexis Williams also had 14 points and with Pendarvis’ 12 points, the foundation of the Aggies’ 58 points was laid.
Johnson expressed how important both wins were to the team.
“It gives us a lot of confidence going into the second half of the conference,” she said.
Although other Mustangs did not attain high figures, they contributed what they could to take their team up to 65.
“It is tough to play a team twice and not over prepare,” Johnson stated. “Our team did good in winning.”
Jazman Patterson finished off strong with nine points and ten rebounds, Dianna Jones claimed seven points and Thomson settled with five points and six rebounds.
Patterson was impressed with her performance as well as her team’s hard work.
“We played hard and showed a lot of character and pulled a win,” she said.
According to Patterson, game two was easier to play because the team had more time to adjust.
“I love my team and we are all working hard,” she said. “We all have great potential for this year.”
The Mustangs’ victory improved them to 13-3 overall and to 9-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
After hosting Texas A&M Commerce, Midwestern State will visit Tarleton State this Saturday. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
