Following his speech to students and faculty on campus, Congressman Mac Thornberry stopped by the Campus Watch Studios.
Thornberry ran as the incumbent for the 13th Congressional District Seat which he has held for the last 20 years. To this day, Thornberry continues to serve on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Thornberry spoke with us about why he decided to pursue politics, something he originally had not thought about, saying the decisions in Washington affect us even here in Texas.
One of Thornberry’s main focuses is National Security, something he feels we could greatly improve on.

Excerpts from the interview:
- “Something as I was growing up, made me realize that even though I grew up on a ranch, seven miles down a dirt road, outside of a town of 2,000 people, the decisions made in Washington affected us even here in Texas.”
- “Most of my time in office I have focused on national security. So I’ve been involved in creating the Department of Homeland Security, the National Nuclear Security Administration, Intelligence Community Reform trying to help update our organizations to make the country safer.”
- “In some ways I think we are less safe today than we were even three or four years ago.”
- “Certainly our borders are not secure.”
- “There are more doubts about us now than there’s been in a long time that makes for a more dangerous world.”
- “I think Sheppard (Air Force Base) is very solid. More and more of what we do in the military in the future will be working with allies. That’s one of the things we specialize in at Sheppard is teaching people from various countries how to work together. I worry more about the overall drift of the military, not so much about us here at Sheppard.”
- “The decline in military spending, it has been cut 21 percent since 2010. We cannot keep cutting defense and yet deal with that full range of threats that we’ve been talking about today.”
- “The decisions being made in Washington affect you.”
- “You need to be involved in helping make those decisions rather than leave it to somebody else to make decisions that are going to affect you… that way you can help shape this country for the better.”
