With two quarters left in play the football team is trailing by a two touchdowns. The stadium erupts in cheers as the running back takes the ball down the sideline for an first down. All along, students with their chests painted in a familiar maroon and gold chant-M-S-U-from the right side of the stands. The ‘Stang Gang leading the charge.
The ‘Stang Gang, an unofficial organization created by students for school spirit, located directly below the band at home games, have expressed a desire for a student section. The ‘Stang Gang, much like the infamous Purple Poo at Tarleton State, began to help boost school spirit.
“Student section would be awesome. It gives students a reason to leave the tailgate and actually watch the game,” Katelyn Vinson, nursing junior, said. “I’m on the softball team and, school spirit is at a minimum. Most of our fans are family. We don’t have much student support.”
Tailgating has become the center of attention for members of fraternities and sororities who can be seen beginning a tailgate as early as 11 a.m. for homecoming.
“I feel like tailgating is a great way to show school spirit,” Joe Clever, history senior said. “Sometimes I feel like tailgating becomes less about the game though and more about a party in the lot of the stadium. It should always be a way to become amped up for the game and not become more important than the game.”
The ‘Stang Gang hopes once students start coming into the game, administrators might consider adding a student section.
Jesse Brown, president of Kappa Alpha fraternity and criminal justice and business junior, said, “There should not be a student section if there is not anyone to fill it. If fraternities and sororities teamed up to make going into the games the cool thing to do, I think more people would follow.”
