The women’s soccer team continues its undefeated streak after coming back against Lubbock Christian University for a Friday night home win, 2-1.
“We hadn’t had to deal with coming back,” head coach Damian Clarke said. “We’ve been in a couple games that were tight but for us to be behind and come back and win, it shows some character and it shows some maturity in the group.”
The team had to fight harder after LCU made the first goal of the game. The first and only goal of the game from LCU was red-shirt freshman keeper Courtney Burnette’s third conceived goal of the season. MSU went scoreless in the first half.
“We’ve been a great team defensively,” Clarke said.
In the beginning of the second half, freshman forward Destinee Williamson was able to come up with the equalizer and junior forward Ashley Cottrell with the winning goal later in the half.
“We had big time attacking players that performed tonight,” Clarke said. “Destinee is ridiculously fast and she causes problems and Cottrell to score off the end line.”
Clarke said they kick the ball a little more than he would like and that they’ve got to be able to relax and play out of pressure a little better. Playing teams like LCU that put pressure on them will help them continue to improve as Clarke said the team matured a bit Friday night.
“We’ll grow into a better footballing team,” he said.
Their record so far this season 3-0-3, a six game undefeated streak, the second longest from the start in school history.
The Lady Mustangs will take on Southern Nazarene Tuesday night at home at 7 p.m.
