Seven protesters lined Midwestern Parkway to advocate that active duty police officers wear cameras.
Inspired by the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, the protesters held signs with messages such as “One people united against brutality” and “Who watches the watchdogs?” but protester and English sophomore Stephen Wright said the demonstration reflected more than the Aug. 9 shooting of Michael Brown.
“It has a lot to do with incidents over the years,” Wright said. “It’s not about [Ferguson] specifically but the history in general.”
The protesters covered their faces with repurposed T-shirts, but Wright said the masks weren’t intended to hide their identities.
“It’s a symbol that it doesn’t matter who we are or what we look like,” Wright said. “Most people are OK with what happened just because they think that’s the way it is.”
